With a population of more than 2,300, Excelsior is a community found in Hennepin County. Just 15 miles from Minneapolis, the community is along the southern shore of Lake Minnetonka. The community is home to a number of historic buildings that are found along its Water Street.
The first known visits by settlers is believed to have taken place in 1822. Two young men (Joe Brown and Will Snelling) are said to have rowed up Minnehaha Creek from Fort Anthony. They are said to have landed at or near the site of present-day Excelsior. It would be 1853 until the community proper was settled.
The area is known for having one of the first streetcars in the Lake Minnetonka area. That streetcar service remains in operation until 1932.
From the 1920s on, Excelsior gained a reputation as being the place for professional entertainment. A number of well-known 20th century performers graced the stages of venues like the Excelsior Amusement Park and Danceland. Luminaries ranging from vaudeville acts to the big bands of the 1940s to rick music royalty like the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones performed there over the years.
Today, Excelsior is primarily known for the historic buildings that have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Victorian era homes remain in areas surrounding Water Street, providing tourists with a chance to step back in time.
